Dice Fun!

In Maths today we had fun playing with dice.
Did you know there are lots of fun games you can play with dice?
We worked in small groups to solve math problems and to see who could create the largest numbers.
We used a mixture of different sided dice and two other dice which have addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on them. We have been very busy practising our division of 3 digit numbers and think we are getting much better at it!

On the other side...

For the past couple of weeks in Art we have been working on a piece of work called 'On the other side...'.

The artwork shows what it is like to live in Australia and the opposite to that where people are not as fortunate as ourselves.

The materials we used to create our artwork include coloured paper, paint, oil pastels, foil, cellophane, sponges, cardboard, glue and scissors.

I really enjoyed doing this art. Isobel
It was a great way to compare the differences of the different places. Amber-Rose
It was a great experience to use different materials to create one piece of artwork. Emma
It was fun to give ideas to friends. Chelsey
It was a great way to experience what it might be like in other countries. Stanley
I found doing the road pretty hard. Harry
I feel grateful for what we have, and grateful that I live in Australia. Brock
I enjoyed the hands on part of this activity. Sabian
It was fun because we got to paint. Joshua

We will post some photos soon.

Mobile-Phones

Today we looked at Kennings. We learn't that we need to use figurative language to describe something without saying what the something is.
In groups we brainstormed our ideas to share with the class. As a class we wrote our own kenning on mobile-phones.

'Mobile-phones'

Social-connector
Text-sender
Portable-communicator

Shared Writing

In the Year 6 classroom we have been researching information on Japan.
We have been working in groups to do shared report writing on Japan. We have learnt the importance of using an interesting heading, using sub-heading and in particular we have been focussing on writing great topic sentences and detailed paragraphs.
We have been sharing our writing with the other groups and finding ways to improve our writing. We think we are getting better every day.

Last Friday we made sushi. We followed a recipe that we had to read to put in the correct order before following the recipe. We made sushi that had tuna, carrot and cucumber in it. For some of us it was our first time trying sushi. It was delicious. We loved cooking and can't wait to make something else again soon. The best part was eating it and checking to see how good we can cook!

Update - By Zoe

Hi I am Zoe and this is what has been happening.
In the first few weeks of Term 3 we have been going very well and we have started to learn about the Olympics and the world. Which is a great thing that we are learning about since the 2012 Olympics are on and the world is such an interesting place.
Our assembly was on at school in the second week of Term 3. For the assembly our class was doing the first ever Olympsix.  For the assembly I was the music controller and the prayer person. The assembly was great. It was one of the best assemblys I have ever been in. What we did was a board game that was about the Olympics. We sang two songs, I believe and Eye of the tiger.
While we prepared for our assembly we were visited by some very talented people who came to our town to teach us some drama and acting skills. There were 3 from New York and a lady from Sydney. The people from New York names are Arianna, David and Marree and the lady from Sydney’s name was Carla. The incursion was awesome while we played a game named 'WHOOSH' and 'STATUES'. The games were fun, but we were not finished yet. We were put into groups of 4 and then we made a scene about bullying and we presented it to the class.
We are still learning about the Olympics and all of the contestants and the sports. So now you can see that we are all working hard and we are all trying our best at what comes and what comes and what goes and I hope you can see how lucky we are here in our school and how well Miss A teaches.

Yours Truly

Assembly

It has been such a busy start to Term 3 after a fun and safe holiday.

This week we have been working hard to put together our assembly that is happening this Friday.

We have been working in small teams to put different parts of the assembly together.
Some of us sat down and put our ideas together for a script. Others designed and created props. Another group designed and created the display for the board behind us while we are on stage. A few of us worked together on deciding what people need to wear on the day. A bigger group of us worked on researching information to put into the script. Using the laptops and Ipads in our classroom has been especially handy!

It has been very busy, but lots of learning has been happening!
It has been fun putting our ideas together and working cooperatively in different groups to what we hope will be a fun and exciting assembly!

FISHING TRIP!

Last Thursday we were fortunate enough to go on a fishing excursion.

We began our excursion by taking the bus down to our local beach, which is about a 20 minute bus ride.
When we arrived we had two men introduce themselves and talk to us about sun safety and fishing safety.

We then spent a couple of hours fishing. Some of us caught some fish and one of us even caught an octopus. That was very exciting! Some of us only managed to catch seaweed, but we all had such a fun time having a go!

At the end of the clinic we had a quiz about the safety messages from earlier in the morning and some of us won some cool prizes.

Here are some photos of us enjoying our day. We would love to go again next year!

A busy start to Term 2

In Maths last week were busy learning about different types of lines and angles. We were also able to use our protractors to measure different angles.

Did you know....
- Right angles are 90 degrees (Zac)
- An angle between 0 degrees and 90 degrees is called an acute angle (Conor)
- An angle between 90 degrees and 180 degrees is called an obtuse angle (Christine)
- A straight angle is exactly 180 degrees (Jock)
- A reflex angle is between 180 degrees and 360 degrees (Chelsey)
- There are 360 degrees in a circle, which is called a revolution (Alisha)

Matilda

Hello from the Year 6 classroom,

We have been reading our class book 'Matilda'.
Here are some of our thoughts....

Chelsey - I think it is really interesting and makes me want to hear more.

Tesshara - It makes me want to be able to do what she can do.

Stanley - I like all the characters in the story. I really like Mr Wormwood
because he is cheeky and funny to hear about.

Alisha - It is an intriguing story and makes me want to hear more.

Josh - It is interesting to read because the characters are cool. Mr Wormwood is my favourite because he is funny and greedy.

Christine - When you first hear a bit of the story you don't want to stop reading. Every time Miss A puts the book down the whole class says 'aaaaw'.

Emma - I think Matilda is very clever and exciting to read about.

Zac - It is good, interesting and fun to see Matilda pull pranks on her Dad.

Amber-Rose - I liked it when Matilda bleached Mr Wormwood's hair!

S&E - T&E

This term in Society & Environment lessons we have been learning about exploration.

To begin the unit we looked at Ptolemy's map. Claudius Ptolemy was a mathematician, astronomer, geographer and astrologer. He was a Greek-Roman from Egypt. He created an atlas around 150 C.E. This map is how he thought the world was.

We have done lots of research on famous explorers in the classroom and in library lessons. At the moment we have all chosen our own famous explorer to research and complete a project task on. It is very interesting learning about the history of the world.

We have also looked at navigational devices used by early explorers.
In particular we have looked at the Astrolabe. We have even made our own. We use these to measure the altitude of different objects.

Want to know how to make an Astrolabe?

Our Technology task was to design and create a ship to set sail that can catch wind from all directions. We found this very exciting. We each came up with different plans and designs and chose our best ones to create at school.

We had so much fun testing them out and having races. We have learnt that some materials are more appropriate than others. Especially if you do not want them to sink like the Titanic.

MATHEMATICAL MINDS

We have been working extremely hard in Maths this term.

During our Math lessons we practise mental computations strategies - there are so many to learn. We love playing Math Bingo to help us with our timetables.

We have also been doing activities using the smart board. We really like this!

Sometimes after that we get to do an activity with a partner where we can share what we know and help each other. This can help if we don't quite understand something.

We then complete a task that has to do with our focus for the lesson. We have had different focuses this term. We have looked at numbers and place value, patterns, reading graphs, creating graphs and a few more.

We have really enjoyed the problems solving and the investigations that we get to do using all the skills we learn in our focus lessons.
Some of us have made games and learning things for other students to practise with. We can't wait to have a go and see how they work.

Next term we are going to work towards getting better at mental computation and the speed of our timetables. Feel free to let us know how you think we could get better at these. We will keep you updated on our progress next term!!

Magnificent Music

This term in Music with Mrs W our class has been learning about African drumming and African dancing.

We have been working in groups to make our own music. We play instruments such as drums, tap sticks, bells and shakers as well as clapping our hands. We were able to record our music and listen to it. It was fun!

ICT

This term in ICT lessons with Mrs S we have been learning about creating a montage of London and the Olympics. A montage is about 20 pictures that you change the size and angle of and fit them all onto one page. We also created a PowerPoint presentation about what we did over our Christmas holidays. That was very fun! We have been learning important computer skills like cut, copy and paste. Did you know you can cut, copy and paste words and pictures? We are going to be looking at changing the colours of pictures soon. That should be interesting.

We get to use the computers for other subjects too. At the moment we are busy publishing newspaper articles we have been working on as well as researching famous explorers. We also use them for Mathematics and English games like Mathletics and Spellodrome. There is so much we can use computers for including THIS BLOG! :)

Sweating it up in SPORT

In sport lessons this term we have learnt about basketball, swimming and soccer.

We began out basketball unit by looking at the rules of basketball. We then got outside and began learning ball skills like bouncing and passing. After we learnt attacking and defending skills we moved into games. It was very hot and sticky and we got very thirsty since it was very hot. Some of the skills were difficult, but some were easier to learn. On the last week Miss A assessed us as we played some games. Some of our favourite parts were playing games like Golden Child and playing games against eachother of basketball.

After basketball for two weeks we had swimming lessons at the local pool.We really enjoyed our swimming lessons with our swimming instructors because it was nice and cool for a change.

We have just started learning all about soccer. Did you know lots of people in our class play soccer on the weekends? Miss A used to play soccer too!
We have been looking at accurate passes and how to kick a soccer ball properly. We look forward to learning more next term and playing more games against each other.

We will keep you posted on our soccer skills early next term!!
